eViking: Let's Wait fast

eViking: Let's Wait fast: Converting an ATV to electric is a very tricky thing. Solving one problem will cause three new ones. I started to work on a smaller version ...

Twist And Shout

I am using a shunt and a JLD404 to see my consumption.
The problem is sometimes a much too high number.
Mostly when I work with the ATV as a camera car.
A lot of stopping, starting, reversing and again..

First I had my cables twisted. And very bad numbers.
Than I untwisted my about 1,8m cables for a 88Km range test drive. The numbers came closer.
But not at filming.
Now I have a new twisted and shielded and frame grounded cable.
And..same problem.
I guess it has something to do with the direct drive and the controller.
Back Electromotive Force and a stalled motor when starting from zero could probably cause this problem..

Upside Down

I lost two Meanwell DC/DC converters this year.

Moisture accumulates between housing, insulation and electronics board
and destroys the board.

Simple solution is mount the converter upside down.

Pre Thinking

It is not particularly easy and cheap to build a simple test version.
The exact position for the second bearing on the larger gear wheel is the problem.
I think, I can go directly to version 2.1 milled out of aluminum...

Drive Shaft Measurement

First I need to know how they made the original drive shaft.
Second: Thinking about the most perfect test drive shaft.

Drivetrain 2.0

The first parts for the new drivetrain just came in.
So what is the plan..
I will test a 2:1 drivetrain with industrial components.
When everything works out, I will make the parts lighter and possibly fabricated new parts out of 7075 aluminum.
We will see.

Cable Harness

I am building myself a new cable harness for my need.
It starts pretty tough but then it becomes more easy...
The best part is, if everything is connected and works perfect.)

New Electric

Today I visited Anne from New Electric again.
We had a great lunch.
I picked up 80 CALB CA60AH cells for the ATV.

Weekend Shift

A job in a nature reserve came in.
She is not really ready, but ready enough for a test job.
The special feature: driving on the beach and "in" the sea.

Finding Mr Right Place

In addition to my normal work, I have spent this week to find the perfect place for the DC-DC converter. It has to be dry, heat conductive, airy, secure, be easily accessible and Deep wading.
Not so easy on an ATV.

Work Is Worth

It seems slower than it is.
The small details are very time-consuming.
But the work is worth it.

Mounting Adapters

To build the mounting adapters takes forever this week.
One rear mount
A front Mount
Three points are enough for now.

The Perfect Spot

The best Controller position is found (I Guess).
I think I have checked all possible mounting positions...

Take Off

Guess What..

Direct Drive Mounting

The WarP 9 or better the brush holder is not really made for running clockwise.
So my main drive is coming from the CE head.

STOP

I already had the old broken motor on the hook to bring it back in the ATV to fix it. But suddenly I said to myself: "Stop this..."
I never finished the test.
My thought was that the battery pack will be too heavy. But then an another idea came to my mind...
But first testing!

Aestivation

This project fell to sleep a little. I am getting more things together on my 2CV test bench car and next on the Toyota Landcruiser.
But the Grizzly will be an awakening.

Could not wait..)

I did a very raw test drive with a 12v Battery. I was happy like a little boy...))
I measured 10V and 120-130A at about 10Km/h.
Starting at about 280A and a very close circle at about 180A dropping to 9,5V.
